What is Band Camp?

Band Camp is the ?Spring Training? of the Marching Band. Like Spring Training, different parts of the band begin training at different times. Students who are new to the Band begin practice at the school one to two weeks before everyone else. This provides time for the Band Director and his staff to teach basic marching techniques, which is the beginning of learning the drill and provide other basic information to the new students. Returning students begin practice at the school the week before band camp. The first portion of the drill will be assigned, marching techniques will be reviewed, and the band will begin the process of becoming a cohesive marching unit.

The next week, all members of the marching band travel offsite to Band Camp. This allows the Director to focus the attention of the Band soley on learning the Marching Program. It also allows the students to become a more cohesive unit as each student becomes familiar with the other students in their section and the entire band. Much of the future success of the band is determined during this time. The better the band knows the Marching Program when they leave Band Camp, the more likely they are to succeed during the competitive season.

Each student can play an important role in making Band Camp successful. Music for the marching band program will be available from the Director before the end of the prior school year. Each student should practice the music consistently during the summer and have it memorized before Band Camp begins. That will allow them to focus on learning the Drill when they begin Band Camp. It is very difficult to learn both at the same time. GOOD summer preparation will make for a GREAT Band Camp and a SUPER Marching Season!!!
